Using JavaScript to provide a solution may be viable, but impractical in the long term. Personally, I think any solution to this is going to require collaboration from screen reader vendors as well as from the microformats community. However, in my experience, there's little evidence to suggest that either of these groups are willing to step up to the mark.

Hi Jim - there are some small pockets of excellence, in that regard, but its early days, yet.

Hi Andy,

I was interested when I first saw Jeremy Keith demonstrate Tails last year. But the focus there is on exposing data to the end user through the browser. My interest is in publishing archive data to share with other sites or online services. There doesn't seem to have been much done on that front – using microformats to share data between sites.

As a user, (rather than wearing my publisher hat) being able to add microformatted events directly to my calendar app is enough for me to advocate microformats - it's what got me interested in them in the first place. And soon (from v3.0), this functionality will be in Firefox (and shortly afterwards Opera and IE)...
